Description Cornmint is often called peppermint. Menthol crystals are a by-product of distillation. Cornmint essential oil can be used to replace peppermint essential oil. Cornmint plants cannot be called peppermint because at room temperature, cornmint freezes because of its high menthol content. Menthol is removed for commercial use and the remaining oil is often sold as peppermint oil. Menthol from this plant is used by the tobacco industry.
